Spring Fling: Celebrate the Changing Season

There is something about the transition into spring that feels so magical! It’s almost as though I can internally feel the season change. Maybe it is because the time change occurs and the days feel longer. Maybe it is the excitement of all that spring brings: warmer weather, beautiful things growing, Easter, and the end of yet another school year. Maybe it is all that spring represents - new beginnings, resurrection and regrowth - that makes me feel it so deeply. Whether you celebrate for just one day or the whole season, we hope you are excited to welcome spring!

Get Out in Nature

With weather much improved (or at least improving), it time to get outside. What better way to celebrate Spring than by being outside experiencing it? .

Plant Something

Now is the time to get outside and in the dirt. Don’t have a backyard or a green thumb? That’s okay, go support a local nursery and pick out something potted: flowers, succulents, or an edible plant. Learn together how to care for what you grow.

Nature Study

Watching nature is the perfect opportunity to study it. Discuss the water cycle, learn about how seeds grow, study favorite animals - look for bird nests that can be observed over time. Hunt for caterpillars and learn about metamorphosis. Did you know there are kits you can order that come with caterpillars so you can watch them transform? It is truly magical to experience the life cycle of a butterfly.

Adventure With Friends

Exploring nature with friends provides some of the most enriching learning experiences.

  • Plan a hike for a few friends or your co-op and send the kids on a nature scavenger hunt!

  • Take a ranger hike to learn about local, native vegetation and animals.

  • Find a farm to cut your own flowers or pick your own strawberries.

Springtime Literature

Read something fantastic together! From Eric Carle’s The Tiny Seed to Beatrix Potter’s The Complete Tales (Peter Rabbit), there are many beautiful books about Spring. Even Little Blue Truck has a Spring edition that is quite sweet. Research some books that will be meaningful in your home and order them in advance, shop your local bookstore, or explore the library for your favorite titles. I’ve been slowly building our library with some of Read Aloud Revival’s Picture Books for April booklist.

Create Something Beautiful

Celebrate the season of renewal by creating something beautiful! This is a great opportunity to make art based on your nature study. Create a mutli-media potted flower on canvas using paints, fabric, pipe cleaners, buttons, paper, cupcake liners, or markers. Grab some acrylic paints or paint markers and decorate clay pots before planting in them. Make a fairy garden using materials found on a hike or in the backyard, or use a fun kit if you need some inspiration.

The possibilities are endless, find something that your child will find joy in creating. Set up the watercolors to recreate an image from one of the beautiful spring books you read.

Prepare Your Heart for Easter

Resurrection is so beautifully represented in spring. For those of us who believe in the resurrection of Jesus, we have the opportunity to really reflect on and connect spiritually with Easter. If you would like to share the Easter story with your children, we recommend The Easter Story (also a Read Aloud Revival recommendation) and the relevant chapters in The Jesus Story Book Bible. Make a set of resurrection eggs for a fun, hands on learning activity!

**2022 Update: Our favorite unit study creator, Gather ‘Round Homeschool, now has an Easter unit available! It is beautiful and our kids are loving it. It’s not too late to get your digital download!

Create Traditions

If you don’t already have some special traditions to celebrate spring, we’ve got you covered! These are some of our favorites and a couple ideas to get you started.

  • Spring Tea - plan a beautiful tea party and decorate with flowers and bright colors. Read some poetry about spring or plan an outdoor garden tea party with friends.

  • Dance Party - who doesn’t like to dance in celebration? Use our fun Spring Playlist or make your own with songs your family loves.

  • Acts of Kindness - celebrate by sharing your joy with others. Deliver flowers to friends or ask your local memory care facility if they would accept flowers.

  • Special Foods - whether you prefer cooking or baking, find something unique to celebrate spring. My personal favorite are carrot cake cookies (we call them Bunny Cakes!)

What do you love most about spring?
