It’s time to talk about a theme day that we all love in our house: Star Wars Day! We like to experience numerous themed learning days in our home - Harry Potter science days, literature based days like Frozen Theme Day, favorite toys day like Lego Day, and even sports themed days. But this one is different. This one is an annual tradition in our home and it always happens in May. “May the fourth be with you.”

What is it?

  • When: It’s a theme day that happens only on May 4! Mark your calendars now and make sure you plan around it.

  • Theme: It can be anything Star Wars theme - any or all of the nine main movies, the in-between movies, the Mandolorian, anything Star Wars.

  • What To Do: It’s a theme day which if you check out our How To Design a Theme Day, you will get the picture that it’s a variety of activities throughout the school day - all Star Wars or space themed. A book, a craft, a treat, a science experiment, and a game. (Check out our review of Star Wars resources here.)

  • Don’t Have an Entire Day? Make it an evening! You can just play a game, enjoy a Star Wars MadLib, make and eat some Star Wars sugar cookies, and watch a movie - and you have a memorable family experience. Don’t forget to take pictures!

3 Reasons Its Our Favorite

  1. Memorable May Family Tradition: Annual consistency makes memories and this has become a really fun one. We’ve have had a Star Wars Day for the past six years. It time stamps the year too - we know it’s about a month until summer!

  2. Reignites an Interest in Space: it really is a vast span of space - who knows what’s all out there in the ultimate frontier.

  3. A Break from the Mundane: In the home stretch of a school year, when we are looking to finish well, it’s a nice breather to just say, “Let’s just have fun today.”

How We Use It

  1. Kick off Space Unit Study: In the past we have used it to kick-off our study of science. Sometimes it’s a month, sometimes, two weeks, or just a few days. I like doing space study for every day that we watch a Star Wars movie. Resources include Mr. DeMaio YouTube videos about planets and his Teacher Pay Teachers accompanying worksheets, Who Was Neil Armstrong, What is Nasa, Usborne Space Books, and now, the Gatherround Space Unit Study.

  2. A New Experience: On the actual day of May 4th, we introduce a new Star Wars movie. This is the only time of year my kids are allowed to watch Star Wars - for this purpose! We want them to be excited and not grow weary of the movies. Every year we introduce 1-2 new movies to them. This year we are introducing The Mandolorian.

  3. Focus on the science experiments: This theme day makes me do experiments! Sometimes I save their Kiwi Crates or Mel Science kits that involve space and forces to complete during this time. Last year my daughters each made their own Kiwi Crate and Tinker Crate versions of the solar system. It’s so great when everything is provided for you.

  4. Involve the Spouse: This is one theme day that many spouses would want to be involved in, so invite him! It can be just for the treats and movie part. Give him a paper mask of Darth Vader and take a family picture.
