Star Wars Day, May the Fourth be with You

You heard it right. We are talking about May 4th. It’s Star Wars Day on May 4th, and you need to get ready RIGHT NOW! So, after you read this, go on your computer and order your supplies - we may be isolated right now, but let’s all do Star Wars Day TOGETHER this year. Even if The Force does not run strong in your family, you can still have a killer homeschool family day celebrating one of the best stories from a galaxy “far, far away.” Say, “Alexa, turn on Star Wars Soundtrack” and let’s get nerf-herding!

A Star Wars Day in our house includes Star Wars cookies, crafts, experiments or projects, and of course the movies. It includes MadLibs, dressing up, taking pictures, and sticker books. It can be anything you want it to be...as long as it’s Star Wars themed. You can set up activities as stations for the kids to rotate through, or do one activity at a time. Here’s some ideas to choose from to make a Star Wars Day the epic homeschool day it deserves to be:

1. Mad Libs Star Wars Themed

Even the little ones can give you words to fill in. Go around the table/room, collect the words requested, and then read aloud. Let the giggles ensue. Then, pass the MadLibs pad to the left and the next person leads it. You can let each person do one individually, and then read aloud too. We bought a Mad Libs pad from Amazon, but you can search for other word play stories online to print out as well.

2. Crafts

We’ve enjoyed using Pinterest for this activity. Put “Star Wars Craft” in the search engine and you will find dozens of craft options. Prepare this ahead of time (like weeks ahead of time!) to make sure you have all the supplies needed. My favorite one is the paper bag craft puppet where you just need a brown paper bag, color construction paper, typical crafting supplies, and a little bit of artistry. You can make light sabers like we did too with the same supplies. Or make a Death Star using a balloon, strips of newspaper, paper mache glue (recipe online), and paint. If you do this one, you might want to start the day with the craft since you need it to dry before you can paint it and pop the balloon.

3. Experiments and Engineering

There are tons of experiments you can do and mechanisms to engineer relating to Star Wars. Build an active volcano, make Jabba’s slimy boogers (green slime), or create a hovercraft. There are so many options that are especially great for teens in the book Star Wars Maker Lab. Many of the options in this book are quite work-intensive, so prior to Star Wars Day, sit with your teens and review the book and ask them, “Which one of these would you each like to make?” Then make sure you have the supplies on hand before May 4th.

4. Trivia

It really helps to connect to the movies if you know more about the story. This book, Star Wars Made Easy, is a really fun read for your young readers, whether they want to peruse the whole thing or choose a topic to learn, and then present to the family. You can even create a trivia game based upon which pages your children present on. You can write the questions as they present, or ask them ahead of time to prepare questions to give you as part of their report. Then, after everyone’s report, you play a family trivia quiz or game with prizes! The winner should definitely be awarded their medal the Princess Leia way, with music and all.

5. Cookies

Every year we make sugar cookies from boxed cut-out dough. My kids get to roll out the dough and then use their Star Wars cookie cutters to make it a truly on theme cookie. Let them frost it or eat it plain. It’s a life skill activity with a big yummy pay-off.

6. Lego Kits

There are tons of Star Wars LEGO kits that are available on Amazon that are under $15. You can purchase one for each child, or just buy one and set it up as a station to rotate through along with cutting out cookies and the Star Wars craft.

7. Activity books, stickers, tatoos, blow-up lightsabers, and pencils

...all Star Wars themed - These are the items that make a party feel like a party! You can put some of these in goodie bags for them to open during the day or as prizes for the trivia game. You can have a special activity book for each child like DK’s Ultimate FACTIVITY Collection Star Wars Activity Book sitting at their place as a surprise at breakfast for when you serve those Lightsaber sausage links or Wookie bacon. (Star Wars cookbook and recipes available online.)

8. Photo Booth

Some of us love the photo booth idea so much that we’ve bought the photo booth backdrop and all. But, you don’t need a professional set-up to have a photo booth. Find some black, red, brown, spacey, or Star Wars wrapping paper and tape two to four cuttings overlapping each other on a plain wall. Get some masks or star wars-ish costumey stuff set out in a basket, and have fun with a photo booth! Ask your kids to help you pull together the items and see how creative they can be! I just bought masks for this year’s party as a new addition to our collection.

9. Paper Goods & Table Dressing

An easy way to theme your meals is to order or pick-up Star Wars themed paper goods from Amazon or your local party supply store. We have plates, napkins, and cups to make sure each meal is a Star Wars meal. You can also dress your table with a red or black tablecloth and use your photo booth wrapping paper folded in half to roll down the middle of the table as a table runner. Then decorate the runner with a few lightsabers and Star Wars figures or lego kits you’ve completed. While you eat, play the Star Wars Cantina song in the background.

10. Movies

You can’t have a Star Wars Day without the Star Wars movies!!! You can choose to have a marathon and in between each movie take a break with one of the activities listed above. You can pick one or two movies that everyone agrees on mixed in with the activities or show one at the end of the day.

There are so many other things you can do, and each year you can change it up. If you have Star Wars figures you can make home movies by writing scripts, memorizing lines, learning camera tricks and lighting techniques, and practice using video editing software. There’s cookbooks, glow-stick hikes, puzzles, how-to-draw YouTube lessons, magnet boards, knitting crafts, oh, and Disney resorts with Star Wars LAND! Nothing is more perfect than going to Galaxy’s Edge at Disneyland on May the Fourth be with You day! But for right now, with these ten elements, you are sure to have an awesome Star Wars homeschool party on May 4th...but wait, there’s more! One more. I need to highlight this one because it’s such an awesome addition, and deserves it’s own moment…

The Han Solo Card Game!

WHAAAT? There’s a Han Solo card game?! How did I not know about this sooner!?!?! Ordered it, studied it, and I am ready to play on May 4th. Cannot wait to introduce this to my kids!

However you want to execute your Star Wars Day, end it well. Remember that Yoda knows best, “Do. Or do not. There is no try.” Light a fire, grab a light blanket, pop some popcorn, grab your plate of homemade Star Wars cookies and snuggle, cuddle, and enjoy the magic of story-telling in film. And always, May the Fourth be with you.

What are you planning for the next Star Wars Day, May 4th?
