Things I Never Knew (Before Homeschooling)

We test run our new segment, and Mandi shares something she recently learned that she never knew before homeschooling her own children.

In Math-U-See lesson for Gamma, Steve Deming is teaching about multiplying by 5’s. He teaches about skip counting, learning your 5’s times tables, and the patterns of a 5 and a 0. But then, he introduces a quick shortcut for multiplying by 5 for larger numbers.

Shortcut

If you are multiplying a number higher than 12 by 5, or any number, just add a zero and then cut the number in half!

5 x 14 = 140/2 = 70

5 x 18 = 180/2 = 90

5 x 27 = 270/2 = 135

5 x 128 = 1280/2 = 640

That’s it! Another way to quickly multiply by 5.
