Scoop on the Coop

Mandi’s son has developed a passion for guitar and is sad about taking a break from lessons. Jessica’s daughter has been taking theme songs and figuring them out on the piano. She began ear training during Sound Beginnings at 4 and can now transpose music not just on piano but ukulele.

Topic

As we have discussed many times, we are huge advocates of music education. So much so, that music is non-negotiable in our homes and is considered core curriculum in our homeschooling life.

According to New England Board of Higher Education, elementary music education benefits kids in the following ways:

  • Enhanced language capabilities

  • Improved memory

  • Strengthened hand-eye coordination

  • Powerful study habits

  • Teamwork

  • Heightened mental processing and problem-solving

That same Psychology Today article also states that formal studies have shown that the highest benefit from music education is seen in children who start training before age 7.

The National Association for Music Education adds even more benefits to the list with:

  • Increased emotional development

  • Fosters a positive attitude toward imagination and intellectual curiosity

  • Develops creative thinking

  • Develops spatial intelligence

  • Improves self-confidence and sense of achievement

We found Vince Hanvey, owner of U.S. Music Lessons in 2020 when finding any in person lessons for children was nearly impossible. The passion Vince has for music education was apparent in my first conversation with him and he got our girls setup for their joint ukulele lessons right away. When we arrived for their first lesson, the girls were welcomed warmly and I felt right away that the focus of U.S. Music Lessons was on the children. Vince works hard to hire quality teachers, to address any issues promptly, and to provide performing opportunities as often as he can. Not only have our children benefited immensely from his passion and knowledge, but we have found an advocate for music education.
