Episode 47: Co-Ops Part 2

In this episode we discuss how we formed our casual co-op and the ways it has evolved over the years into our beloved Coop Group. We have worked hard to create a common mission for our group, find families who share our vision and set goals for the group to continue to grow. The Coop Group allows for amazing cooperative learning opportunities and for lifelong friendships with homeschool families.

Scoop on the Coop

Mandi shares about reorganizing her school room in preparation for next school year. Jessica shares the learning opportunities she found on a long drive, including: Story of the World, Who Was George Washington, Who Was Alexander Hamilton, and What Was the Declaration of Independence.

What is a Casual Co-Op

A group of families working together to build a community that serves their interests: nature, learning experiences, field trips, school-like events, etc. We call ours, the Coop Group.

The Coop Group

The Coop Group started with a mutual vision of Mandi and Jessica nearly 5 years ago. We started slow building a base group of homeschool families and slowly creating the mission and heart of our group: to have a group for learning adventures and to form long lasting friendships with likeminded homeschool families. Our 20-21 school year was our most successful with a book club theme. We are looking forward to next year’s theme and will share more about how we plan in Part 3.

Coop Q&A

Any ideas for helping my 7 year old remember how to spell words? Mandi says the curriculum she uses, Spell to Write and Read, uses techniques to spell with fingers that does not require memorization. Jessica uses Spelling You See, which also does not use memorization. Both believe that letter sound recognition, regular reading and practice will build skills over time.
