A) Warriors (book 3) by Erin Hunter

Chosen By: Ruby, almost age 11

What It Is: A fiction novel about cats in clans

Reasons It Is A Fave:

  1. It’s about cats

  2. It’s cool that the cats are in clans

  3. It’s creative

How She Uses It:

It inspired me to write a book about my cat and the stray cat that comes to my house. It also helped my drawings of cats get better because of the cover.

B) Trumpet of the Swan by E.B. White

Chosen By: August, age 5

What It Is: Chapter book

Reasons It Is A Fave:

  1. I like all the chapters

  2. Exciting story like when the father faints after being shot

  3. I like the characters, especially Louie.

How He Uses It:

Family book, listened to audiobook together. Immediately he asked to read it again upon finishing it. It inspired us to listen to the dramatic audio version.

C) Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket

Chosen By: Sofia, age 11

What It Is: It is a chapter book series with 13 main books and a few related titles. It’s about 3 orphans who meet a bunch of really weird guardians, some friends, and a really funny villain.

Reasons It Is A Fave:

  1. It’s funny but not in a little kid way

  2. It keeps you interested the whole time and makes you want to read the next chapter and the next book.

  3. It teaches a lot language in memorable ways.

How She Uses It:

She read through them really quickly and is still looking forward to reading some other related titles (The Beatrice Letters and Lemony Snicket: The Unauthorized Biography). It inspired her to watch the Netflix show, which was also really good. She enjoyed reading the physical books and listening to the audiobooks, with a slight preference for the physical books since they are easier to take along and read.

D) Diary of a Wimpy Kid (book 16) by Jeff Kinney

Chosen By: Micah, age 12

What It Is: It’s a fiction journal about a middle school kid where everything bad happens to him. For example, he was trying to make a comic with his friend to go in the school paper. He didn’t think that the comic was good enough, but his friend liked it, so his friend continued it by himself, and that comic actually did make it in the school paper. His friend got all the credit!

Reasons It Is A Fave:

  1. It’s funny. In this book the kid randomly throws a basketball behind him and gets it in to win the game for the other team.

  2. A journal from a kid my age. It is cool to read what another kid my age thinks.

How He Uses It:

I have now written in four journals called Diary of a Happy Kid where I write about my daily life.

E) The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett

Chosen By: Maisy, age 8

What It Is:

  • It’s a chapter book.

  • Not True - Fiction

  • It’s about a girl named Mary who finds a secret garden. She lives in a mysterious mansion that has secrets!

Reasons It Is A Fave:

  1. I love how there is a garden in it, because I love nature

  2. All the creativity about how she finds the key, and she has a pet bird she talks to as a friend

  3. It has mystery!

How She Uses It:

Daddy started to read it aloud, but my brother and sister didn’t like it, so I listened to it as an audio book. Then, mommy and I watched the movie on mommy’s bed together drinking fizzy drinks!
